Let’s Turn it Around!

Psalm 36

The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.

For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.

The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.

He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

David describes the helpless condition of  the wicked.  First and foremost, there is no fear of God.  This is rampant in our society today.  We see murder all around us, sexual immorality becoming the norm, blatant disregard for Christianity, and corruption on every side.  It’s easy to see this and just say people are just going bad.  But what it boils down to is no fear of God, no fear of His word, no fear of eternal consequences.  It is sad that there is no feeling of responsibility  or accountability any more.  It’s becoming a society that says just do what you want and don’t worry about what might happen to you.

How can we turn this around?  Well, all the laws in the world won’t correct it.  Remember back in Jesus day, the Pharisees had piled laws upon laws trying to make the people, and themselves, more righteous.  But it was to no avail.  Jesus told the it was a heart issue, not a law issue (Matt 23:23). He tells them they should have been practicing justice, mercy and faithfulness.  what is it that Micah says?  In Micah 6:8 he says the Lord requires that we do justly, love mercy and walk humbly before our God.    The gospel is the answer to our social problems in this country.  A change of heart is what is needed.  And it’s up to the church to make that happen.

When I look down the list David gives if the attributes of the wicked, it is exactly what I would expect.  They are proud (V2), deceitful (V3), unwise (V3), not concerned with doing good (V3), devises mischief (V4) and is up to no good (V4).  These thins  are all heart issues, and we, as Christians owe it to them to share the love of Christ with them.  Remember, Jesus said pray for your enemies and do good to those who use you (Matt 5:44).  It’s time we had a revival in America.

Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.

Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast.

How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

David tells us about God’s mercy, righteousness, judgments and lovingkindness.  God extends these things to anyone who asks.  I am always amazed at the fact that He loved me before I even knew Him.  And in the same way, He loves all those workers of iniquity out there today who don’t know Him.  He loves the murderer, the rapist, the sexually immoral, the drug dealer, the prostitute, the embezzler, the liar.  He loves them all, and is just waiting for us to get busy and introduce them to His Son.

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

When we bring those workers of iniquity into God’s kingdom, they will be satisfied in His house.  They will drink of the living water, and taste of that heavenly Bread of Life.  They will have eternal life, and will become a light for others to see and believe.  If we could each just reach one, and they could reach one, it would not take long to eradicate crime altogether.  Hallelujah!

10 O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.

11 Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me.

12 There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.

David knows ghat God’s love and righteousness are his, and he does not have to fear the wicked one.  The wicked one is already defeated.  And he will not rise again against David.  The same will apply to anyone who has that personal relationship with Jesus.

Church, it’s time go get busy.  It’s time to reach out in love and minister to the people who might be considered in with the wicked ones.  They need Jesus more than anything else.  Let’s turn this country around so once again we are a God fearing nation.
