Hearing from God (2 Sam 7-8, 1 Chron 17-18, Psalm 60) April 24

“And the Lord preserved David wherever he went.”  Wouldn’t you love to have nhat written about your life’s story?  David had victory over all his enemies. He listened to God and did what he was supposed to do, most of the time.  In fact, before Bathsheba comes on the scene, we hear of nothing that David did wrong in the Lord’s eyes.  This is a very incredible thing.  God reminds David that he came from the sheepfold, and now is King over the chosen nation.  I;m not sure about this, but I think this ios the only nation that was taken from under the thumb of a wicked ruler and led on a journey to find a land that they then went in and possessed.  I do know that no other nation was led by God on their journey, not the way He led Israel!  I may have gone over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house, but I did not go through a sea and wander in the wilderness for 40 years, all my food supplied, only to come to another river I had to cross.

Now David wants to make God a house to dwell in.  The thought came to my mind that there is no mention of where God was when Israel was in bondage in Egypt.  After all, God knew they were going to be there. He told Abraham they would be held captive for 400 years, and it came true.  What was God doing for those 400 years?  It;s a rhetorical question. because the Bible does not give us an answer.  All we know is that He next appeared to Moses at the burning bush, while he was tending sheep.  Now that;,s an interesting coincidence.  And when Jesus came, the first ones who the birth was announced to were shepherds in the field.  Moses, David and the shepherds were all called while tending sheep.  We don’t need a house for God.  We need ears to hear God when he speaks, and that might be at the most mundane time of our day.

I am not saying we should not have churches because they are important for the body of Christ.  What I am saying is that God will show up in our lives at the strangest of times, and we need to be diligent and always ready to hear what God has to say.  It is not in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that he will speak to us, although He is there even then.  It may not be in the house of God that he will speak to us, although he does inhabit the praise of His people.  It is in the stillness of the day, while we are going about our tasks, that he will try and grab our ear.  David was real good at hearing God’s voice, most of the time.  As a result of that, the Lord preserved David wherever he went.
